The purchase and financing of a new street sweeper was the only item on the agenda for Washington’s City Council at Monday evening’s meeting. The current street sweeper is 14 years old with more than 10,000 hours of service. Mayor David Rhoads told the council that the current machine “is just shot.” The mayor says that the latest in a continuing string of problems will take $13,000 in repairs for the street sweeper to function. City Clerk Treasurer Beth McGookey told the council that financing is available through Indiana’s municipal bond bank for 4.4% interest over a four-year rent/purchase agreement. The cost of a new street sweeper is $290,000.

In other business, the mayor reminded council members that the follow-up meeting with the city’s landlords on the proposed rental property safety inspection ordinance is scheduled for Thursday, May 14th, in the City Council Chambers.

At the end of the meeting, the mayor reminded everyone that the initial First Friday Concert at the Commons is set for this Friday.

The mayor also said that Food Truck Tuesday gets underway at Eastside Park on May 16th and will run through the end of July.

Following the council meeting, the Board of Public Works and Safety approved a contract with Midwestern Engineers for needed lift station improvements in the city’s sewer system. The board also opened bids for the  Community Crossing Matching Grant paving projects on several Washington streets. Two bids were received and taken under advisement by the street commissioner.
