At the latest Martin County Commissioners meeting, the board approved minutes from the previous session and authorized payments, including a $10,000 upgrade to the sheriff’s office phone system using ARPA funds. This move addressed outdated equipment that had caused issues.
The sheriff’s office reported challenges with staffing, citing difficulties in recruiting deputies. While dispatcher applications have increased, retaining personnel remains a concern, with many using the county as a stepping stone. Commissioners discussed potential incentives, including raises and take-home vehicles, to improve recruitment and retention. In other business, the board approved the purchase of three black sheriff’s vehicles to capitalize on cost savings, a departure from the department’s usual white vehicles.
A metal detector was presented as essential for courthouse security. Discussions included the type of detector (portable, reprogrammable, durable) and its effectiveness. The need for qualified personnel to operate the detector and manage courthouse security was emphasized. The current bailiff has law enforcement experience and has made security adjustments, such as restricting access points during court sessions. Examples were provided to underscore the need for heightened security, including a concealed weapon discovered on a visitor and a past incident where a deputy was injured while serving a warrant. The price of the metal detector is set to increase after the end of the year. Funding may come from capital improvement funds related to courthouse renovations. Approval was sought for a new full-time probation officer position, transitioning from a part-time role, effective January 1.
Efforts to improve collections on EMS services were discussed, including exploring state programs and private collections agencies. Concerns were raised about balancing collection efforts with fairness to individuals, especially seniors on fixed incomes covered by Medicare.
Commissioners gave approval to reallocate ARPA funds for purchasing a new ambulance, with discussion on the rotation and use of existing ambulances.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26th, at 9:00 AM.
