AES Indiana has received approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to transition Units 3 and 4 at its Petersburg plant from coal to natural gas. The company estimates that this repowering will save customers approximately $281 million over the next 20 years by lowering operational costs and will significantly cut carbon emissions. They’re aiming for a 70% reduction in carbon output by 2030 compared to 2018 levels. The company is investing $1.1 billion in Pike County by 2026, including new solar and battery storage facilities totaling 430 megawatts, to enhance grid stability and reduce dependency on coal. AES Indiana aims to be the first investor-owned utility in the state to eliminate coal use by 2026.
