Following the council meeting, the Board of Works and Safety met. The Board approved a request from Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church to close N.E. 2nd Street between Hefron and Flora Streets for the church’s Hispanic Heritage Month event. The Board also received a request from Carol Mirales of Sprinkled with Sweetness and Ashley Montgomery from Rockstar Tatoos to close one block of East Main Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets from 4-8 pm on September 13 to host a Friday after Five event. However, the board asked Mirales and Montgomery to check with other businesses and the residents of the block and report back to the mayor. In other business, the board only received one bid for eight fully equipped police sedans. The bid from John Jones of Salem was for $492,954 for eight fully equipped Dodge Chargers. After some discussion, the board accepted the bid. The next Council and Board meeting is scheduled for September 9 at the Council Chamber.
