The Daviess County Commissioners breezed through a light agenda in near record time Tuesday morning. The commissioners agreed to study a request from the county’s judges for a change in the prospective assignment of courtrooms after the courthouse renovation is completed. Circuit Court Judge Greg Smith said that he and Superior Court Judge Dan Murrie had discussed the situation and felt that assigning the top-floor courtroom to the Circuit Court and the main-floor courtroom to the Superior Court would be the best fit. Commissioner Nathan Gabhart requested the judges put their reasoning in writing for the commissioners to study.
In regular business, the Commissioners awarded the contract for the resurfacing of County Road 300 W, south of U.S. 50, to the low bid of $243,000. The commissioners also agreed to allow the Odon Winklepleck Library to raise the library tax for the library service area. The library will use the funds to expand the library. The library received support from the towns of Elnora and Plainville for the project.
The commissioners also heard a report on the county’s cybersecurity from IT Director Dale Qualkenbush. Qualkenbush reviewed recent security updates and said the county’s computer security has a 24/7 watch for unwarrented incursions. Qualkenbush also asked for guidance from the commissioners on how to implement the required multi-factor ID for employees accessing criminal records.
The next commissioners meeting is scheduled to be at the Produce Patch at 6 p.m. on October 9.
