The Vanderburgh County prosecutor has declined to file charges in connection with the March 2023 death of Deputy Asson Hacker, who passed away during a training event called the “Big Fight” at Club Bushido in Evansville. An investigation by the Indiana State Police found no evidence of wrongdoing by instructors, according to Prosecutor Diana Moers. Hacker’s wife, however, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, alleging the event was more of a hazing ritual and that he did not receive immediate medical attention. Moers countered, stating that video footage shows Hacker was treated at the first sign of distress. The coroner determined his death was caused by exertional sickling due to the sickle cell trait. The case remains ongoing.
