Washington’s Superintendent of Schools, Kevin Frank, updated Washington’s Rotary Club on the local schools and introduced four of the system’s new administrators to the club. Incoming Washington High School Assistant Principal Chris Ashworth told the Rotarians that he will be focusing on absences and tardies this year. Ashworth also reviewed the new state law banning cell phones in the classroom. Ashworth said he will be meeting with the county prosecutor to work out how to address students and parents who have problems with the new state law. Kristin Murphy and Brenda Meredith will be the new administrative team at Washington Primary. Murphy discussed the new entry road for drop-off and pick-up at the primary building. Murphy also discussed the new staff, the school’s preschool program, and the very popular bilingual language program, which will expand to the first grade this year. New Upper Elementary Principal Rhiannon Frye told the Rotarians that this year’s sixth graders will be working; it’s a revised daily schedule that will mirror a junior high schedule using multiple classrooms.
In his remarks, Frank said the local school population continues to grow. Frank said the growth, while not overwhelming, has caused the system to become creative with the use of the current facilities. Frank also urged everyone to attend the public work session scheduled for August 15. Frank said the schools are working with Performance Services to come up with multiple options.
Again, the public work session is scheduled for 7 p.m. on August 15 at the Washington Intermediate School.
