Iris Ann (Hosea) Smith joined her beloved husband, Steve, in their heavenly home on Good Friday, April 7,2023.
Iris was born on May 4, 1940 in Vincennes, Indiana to Roy and Geradine Hosea. She graduated from Lincoln High School and Vincennes University with a degree in Medical Technology. She started her career in Port Huron, Michigan before coming back to Knox County in 1962. While attending the Knox County Fair that summer, she saw a cute fella working at a plumbing booth in the Industrial Building and decided it would be a good idea to sign up for a toilet seat that was being raffled. They started dating that August, got engaged in October, and were married on January 12. 1963. They remained inseparable for the next 59 years until his passing on August 28, 2022. She always joked that she not only won the toilet seat, she got the *** that went with it. There is great comfort in knowing they are together again.
She worked in the lab at Good Samaritan Hospital, was a bookkeeper for Ray Smith & Son, Inc., and was a broker/owner of Wabash Valley Realty for many years. She most recently assisted Steve with tracking Whooping Cranes during their winter migration throughout southern Indiana.
She enjoyed cooking, birdwatching, watching her family grow up, and spending time with good friends and her beloved cousins.
She is survived by her favorite child, Bodie the dog; Shelley Richardson (Mitch Fickling), Jaime Parkes (Jacob Richter), Stephen Parkes, and Sarah Richardson; Mindy Dillon (Jim), Lauren DeHosse (Chance), Owen, Ford, and Dixie (coming April 12th), Macy Wheat (Kole), Hannah Dillon, and Jacob Dillon; Kerry Carrie (Dustin), Brady Carrie (McKenzi) and David Carrie, Meg Parsons (Bodhi) and Jamie Parsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Iris & Steve’s family would like to thank Iris’s girls (and her guys) at the Freelandville Community Home for their love and care of both Iris & Steve.
A graveside service will be held, Tuesday, April 11,2023 at Asbury Chapel at 1:00 P.M. with John McClure officiating. Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Homes, Bicknell Chapel is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
